Decluttering after Eight Years
After losing her husband, our client built a new home in hopes of a fresh start. But even after eight years, she hadn’t been able to bring herself to sort through her closet—the emotional weight of the task felt too overwhelming.
We set a goal of removing nearly two-thirds of the closet’s contents, and succeeded by clearing out 23 bags of clothing for donation and consignment. We then set out to get the remaining items organized by category and color to create a clean, cohesive layout.
With the momentum from purging the closet, it was now clear that a lot more had to go - including the house itself. Once we got the rest of the house decluttered, we brought in a professional stager to help us prepare for listing photos. After her input, we grouped all bright and patterned pieces on matching hangers—bringing visual consistency and making a meaningful impact in the listing photos.
BEFORE: This instance of the closet was taken after decluttering, when all clothes had been categorized, and prior to stagging.
AFTER: A stagged primary bedroom closet.
